The LOCAL HISTORY CLASS is actively researching Ridgewood. Their findings? Ridgewood has not only a very interesting past but is a great place to live and shop!
First do you know who is buried right here in our great neighborhood? I'll give you a hint. He is the most famous magician of them all!
If you know the answer, post me, I'll let you know next week who he is.

The class has also produced numerous books, poems and art concerning the General Slocum. Look for it after June 10th.

National Black History Month

February is National Black History Month. Therefore, you can research one of the numerous African Americans that have made contributions to our society. You will need to write an introduction that clearly states the historical context. Further you need to find out least four facts about this person (or group). The facts should be explained in a paragraph. Please go beyond finding facts about the person's birthday. For example, if you are researching Oprah Winfrey, find out about her Angel Network. Through this network, Winfrey gives away millions of dollars. Also, you need to write a conclusion that cleary states your opinion about this person.

February is National Black History Month. Therefore, you can research one of many important men, women and groups for a project. This project can be used as your exit project if you create a visual and oral presentation.
The report should have an introduction that clearly states the historical context. You should also have at least four facts about the person or group. Each fact must be explained in a paragraph. Please try to find information that is more than just the date and birth of the person. For example, if you are researching Oprah Winfrey, you should try to find out information about her angel network. Winfrey donates millions of dollars to charities through this network.
You also need to have a conclusion that indicates your opinion of this person or group.

Testing Tips

The following are some helpful tips to help you prepare for your tests.

Choose a place at home to study where you feel comfortable and study in that place
Remove as many distractions as you can from your environment. (A distraction is anything that takes your attention away from your studying)
Set goals for how much you want to accomplish during each study session.
When you start an assignment, tell yourself what you already know about the subject, then ask yourself what you are trying to learn about the subject.
Take notes on the main ideas
Try to study for 25 - 45 minutes at a time. Then take a 5 to 15 minute break before starting again.

SOCIAL STUDIES STUDY GUIDE

Read each pararaph
Make up questions about the reading material
Write down the page number and Chapter heading so you can refer to the book if you needed.
Try studying daily.

You were also given a packet about the Revolutionary War that needs to be completed by January 3rd.

Currently we are studying Colonial America. You should be reading your social studies text book. The pages are 92 - 170.
Remember to take notes and to copy the vocabulary words in your vocabulary notebook.
Also, your historian's journal needs to be brought to school every day. Please do not throw away your notes. Your writings are very important and will help you when you take tests or write assignments.
